Honiara City Council Mayoral election postponed

The election of a Mayor for Honiara city has been postponed, pending legal clarification from the office of the Attorney General.

The election, scheduled to take place this morning was postponed to allow the acting city clerk to consult with the department of Home Affairs and attorney General on whether it is legal to elect a Mayor prior to the appointment of ex-officio members of the council.

The Home Affairs department has not yet appointed the 20 ex-officio members of the council, who should include the three Honiara MPs.

The acting City Clerk Robert Fa'arodo is consulting with the attorney general and the department of Home Affairs on this issue.

The Council will meet again at 2PM, where it will decide whether to continue with the election today or postpone it for next week.

The law requires that an election of the Mayor should be held within 14 days of the council election which lapses on Wednesay next week. Two Councilors are contending for the post.
