Solomon Islander leaves for Japan today under Japanese Scholarship

By Nina Tuhaika

A Solomon Islander on Government of Japan scholarship leaves Honiara to study in Japan today.

The student, Jimmy Nuake from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, had graduated from the University of Newcastle, Australia in 2002 with a degree in Civil Engineering.

Upon returning to Solomon Islands in 2003, he had worked with various private companies including Kitano Construction for over 2 years before joining the Transport Policy and Planning Unit, within the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, as a Chief Civil Engineer in June 2007.

He had been accepted to undertake the Japanese Government Research Students Scholarship at Waseda University in Tokyo, one of the highest and prestigious institutions in Japan.

Mr. Nuake will do his Master of Civil Engineering specialising in Asset Management Systems for existing geotechnical infrastructures, including road pavement technology and underground structures such as tunnels and underground mining.

At a meeting with Mr. Iwanade, the Solomon Islands Japanese Chargé d' Affaires, Mr. Nuake had expressed his ambition to becoming a specialised Civil Engineer within the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, and thanked the Japanese Government for giving him this opportunity.
