Solomons Jerry Allan helps South United to win 7's soccer tournament in Moresby as Marist FC fails again

Solomon Islands former national soccer player turned coach in Papua New Guinea, Jerry Allan, scored a goal to help his National Soccer League (NSL) franchise club Hekari Souths United which comprised mainly of PRK Souths players defeat arch rivals and national club champs Telikom University 3-0 after a grueling two-days of competition at the inaugural Mineral Resources Development Company (MRDC) sevens in Port Moresby over the weekend.

United collected K10,000 as the first prize while University collected K5,000 as the runner-up. Third place-getter of K2,500 was University’s second team after beating Madang Souths 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out. Madang Souths took K1,500 for finishing fourth.

The tournament drew 24 teams including NSL franchise club Welgris Highlander, Souths from Madang, Yaosaro from Kutubu, Southern Highlands and top Solomon Islands club Marist FC and Toba Kings.

Solomons two team at the tournament include Marist and Toba Kings, both looked good on the first day, but the heat and hard turf took its toll on the second day with both teams unable to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Minor sponsors of the tournament include Napu Graphics, Petroleum Resources Kutubu, Hekari Holdings, Hekari Security Services, Ela Motors, Lae Biscuit Company and the PNG Defense Force.
