Solomon Islands continues to call for Taiwan inclusion in the United Nations General Assembly
Speaking this morning at the 62nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Minister for Foreign Affairs, External Trade and Immigration, Patteson Oti, said Solomon Islands recently tried to channel Taiwan’s admission application through the established gateways.
Mr Oti however said this attempt was resisted without any regard for the legitimate quest of 23 million Taiwanese people for self-determination by fellow member states.
He said this is against the principle to be committed to uphold international law also enshrined in Article One of the UN Charter.
Mr Oti said organized international hypocrisy explains the indignity which Taiwanese people must suffer at the hands of a powerful group of states interested only in the protection of trade and investment rather than any humanitarian concerns.
He said Solomon Islands support for people who are struggling to reclaim what is rightfully due to them under international law stems from the convictions about what is right and just.
