Australian High Commission office in Honiara supports several sports programs in Solomon Islands

Seven sports organisations received cheques last week to help them promote sport and physical education in Solomon Islands.

Dr Christopher Becher, who has organised Christmas Games in AvuAvu for several years, said that Australia's support has helped him to promote peace in the Weathercoast. "I am very keen to help young people and bring people together."

Training for coaches and referees will commence in AvuAvu in October prior to the Dr Becher Cup taking place around Christmas time. The competition will involve around 50 soccer teams and 18 volleyball teams".

Nick Hatigeva from the Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation said he was looking forward to be able to teach more Solomon Islanders about rugby. "Rugby is a great sport and more Solomon Islanders should have the opportunity to be involved."
Nick will be conducting rugby training courses in Malaita, Renbel and Western Province, organising a clinic for school coaches, providing training for females interested in rugby and support to the Honiara Rugby School of Excellence.

Solomon Islands Basketball Federation's project is aimed at involving more women in basketball. Evelyn Pongi, organiser of the basketball workshop which will be held from 14 to 18 October at the Multipurpose Hall, said she is really looking forward to teaching more girls how to play basketball.

The Curriculum Development Centre at the Ministry of Education has also received Australian support to send sports equipment to ten different schools throughout the provinces to enable schools to begin incorporating physical education into their curriculum.

The main driver of the project, Paul Ravu, the Chair of the Subject Advisory Committee for physical education, said the equipment funded under the project would be a great help. "The funding fulfills my dream to be able to launch the first PE syllabus ever in the Solomon Islands".

Futsal will get a boost with the certification of coaches and referees to Australian standard. Thanks to the Australian Sports Outreach Program, three people will travel to Australia to undergo intensive training. They will then coach others in Honiara and in other provinces with the skills they have learnt.

Futsal players in South Malaita will also benefit from the construction of a futsal court in their province. This facility will allow the Highlands Futsal Association to play futsal on a designated court of correct size.

Triathlon Solomon Islands was presented with a cheque from the Australian High Commission after swimming training early Tuesday morning at Kakabona. Upon receiving the cheque, Vice President Maxon Ala said he and other triathletes were looking forward to teaching more young people how to swim.
