Solomon Islands' Prime Minister expressed concern over unsustainable rate of logging in the country.
Mr Sogavare said the current rate of logging is still unsustainable and the economy is still heavily resource based. “This is a serious matter of concern,” Mr Sogavare said.
However, he said his government is working closely with Solomon Islands Forestry Association (SIFA) and other stakeholders to identify a strategy to reduce this rate of logging.
The Prime Minister was speaking during the Independence celebrations in Auki, Malaita Province. He said unsustainable logging is Solomon Islands’ contribution to green house gas emission, which is directly related to the rate of logging in the country.
“In terms of emission per capita, Solomon Islands and other high logging countries rank amongst the highest in the world. “In this respect, the government is taking the call made by His Excellency the Governor General on this matter seriously,” he said.
Sir Nathaniel Waena during the recent Queen’s Birthday celebrations last month also expressed concern about the rate of logging and its impact on climate change.
