USP Solomon students raised more than FJD$20,000 to assist in tsunami rehabilitation efforts
According to Mr Joseph Samani, an adhoc accountant for the USP Solomons tsunami appeal committee, the FJD$20,707.34 is the net figure after all expenses have been reconciled.
The tsunami appeal fundraising committee raised the funds during a 4 hour dinner and cultural entertainment hosted on Saturday evening, April 21 (from 7pm - 11pm) at the USP dining hall. The cultural entertainment was provided by all the different student cultural associations that affiliate under the Solomon Islands Student Association (SISA) at USP.
It is now expected that a full report will be presented by the committee to the student body on Sunday May 27th, during a combine service for Solomon students in Suva. After that, the adhoc committee's terms of reference will cease.
Initial recommendations by the committee indicated that the funds should be utilised to provide educational materials for affected schools within the Western and Choiseul provinces that were devastated by the April 2 earthquake and tsunami.
However, it is still not confirmed how the funds will be channeled from Fiji to Solomon Islands to eventually assist in the rehabilitation efforts in the tsunami stricken areas.
