SI Junior tennis player wins gold medal at West Pacific tennis championships in Fiji

A part To'abaita national junior tennis player, Mr Duncan Maetoloa (circled in the picture below) has today won a gold medal in the Men's singles category at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) West Pacific tournament currently held at the Dr. Robin Mitchell regional tennis complex in Lautoka, Fiji.

It is understood that Duncan, 16 years of age, has won the gold medal after defeating his 18 year old opponent who is Vanuatu's current number one junior player in the final. This is believed to be the first time for Duncan to beat the Vanuatu junior champion who is known as Lorenzo Pineda. Duncan earlier overcame Fiji's top choice Daneric Hazelman in the semi-finals.

Duncan is teaming up with fellow Solomon Islands tennis player, Ian Honila for the double's finals which will commence tomorrow.

Mr Duncan Maetoloa is the current number one junior national player and has represented the Solomon Islands both at regional and international tournaments.

Duncan participated in the last mini games in Palau and lost in the second round. Early this year, he was part of the Australasia (Oceania) tennis squad that toured Australia for one month. He has also been selected into the national tennis squad to represent Solomon Islands at the upcoming Samoa South Pacific Games in September this year.

Currently, Duncan is under an ITF scholarship at the Regional Training Centre in Lautoka, Fiji. He is attending form five at Central High School.
