Fijian senior police officer tipped to become Solomons police commissioner

A senior Fijian police officer, Jahir Khan is likely to take up the police commissioner's post in the Solomon Islands after earlier reports that the position would be taken up by a Papuan New Guinean.

Assistant Commissioner Operations Jahir Khan said discussions were still in the preliminary stages but he will be going to Honiara on Tuesday next week, upon an invitation from the Solomons government, to finalise the contract.

Mr Khan says discussions are in the preliminary stages and it depends on how things go.

The post was first offered to acting Police Commissioner Romanu Tikotikoca who turned it down to take up the post in Fiji. Mr Tikotikoca said he was waiting to hear from the Solomon Islands government regarding Mr Khan's post.

"Mr Khan is a serving member of the Fiji Police Force. If the Solomons want him they have to communicate with us," said Mr Tikotikoca.

Mr Tikotikoca said he had talked to the Prime Minister's Office in the Solomons about it.
