Patterson Oti defers delivering of statement on relations between Australia and Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands Foreign Minister Patteson Oti has deferred delivering the statement on the relations between Solomon Islands and Australia, which was initially scheduled to be delivered in parliament on Monday.

Relations between the two countries had soured following various issues since mid last year. These include the expulsion of the Australian High Commissioner to Honiara, the Julian Moti issue, and the banning of Police Commissioner, Shane Castles from entering the country.

It is understood Oti did not offer any reasons why he had deferred delivering the statement on Monday. It is not known when that statement would be eventually delivered.

Meanwhile, a United States diplomat, Glyn Davies, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific visited Solomon Islands and met with the Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Speaker of Parliament while he was in Honiara. Mr Davies' area of responsibility in the Pacific covers 14 nations including Australia and New Zealand. He was reported as saying Solomon Islands and Australia should come together and solve their differences.
