MP calls for SI Parliamentary Opposition to be strengthened

The leader of a coalition partner in the Solomon Islands Parliamentary Opposition has expressed concern over the lack of political strength and solidarity within the Opposition.

Northwest Choiseul MP Clement Kengava says this has led to the opposition not performing effectively as the alternative government.

Mr Kengava says one of the main causes was the failure of Opposition Groups and party Executives and Councils to hold meetings to give support to their Parliamentarians. He says the current growing weakness in the Parliamentary Opposition is not attractive to the three sacked Ministers and resigned Deputy Prime Minister to formally join the Opposition Camp.

Under the present Constitution the Parliamentary Opposition is a very loose grouping of MPs who are either committed to their political party or decided not to be part of the Government of the day. Only the Leader of the Opposition is a constitutionally recognized position.

Mr Kengava says he is writing to the Leader of Opposition to call a special convention of the Opposition Coalition partners to enable a review of the partnership with the aim to strengthen and reorganize the coalition.
