North Malaita student wins CTA-USP Regional Youth Essay Competition

A To'abaita student and TARD Chairman, Mr Exsley Taloiburi, has been announced as the first prize winner of a regional youth essay competition that was recently organised by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) and the University of the South Pacific (USP), in a youth congress workshop today in Suva.

The essay competion was advertised regionally based on the theme "Tapping the Potential of Science, Technology and Innovation in agri-food chains to create employment and wealth for youths in the Pacific" and entries were accepted until July 31 2006. The competition was open to Pacific youths who are between 18-35 years of age. As a result, a good representation of essays were received from most of the Pacific Island countries including Samoa, Tonga, Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands.

From the total entries received, writers of the thirteen top essays were sponsored by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation and the University of the South Pacific to attend the regional youth congress which is currently underway at the University of the South Pacific beginning yesterday (05/09/06) and finishing on Friday (08/09/06). The thirteen top essay writers come from most of the Pacific Island countries including:
- Solomon Islands (3)
- Fiji (5)
- Samoa (1)
- Papua New Guinea (1)
- Tonga (1)
- Federated States of Micronesia (1)
- Vanuatu (1)

During the prize presentation today, three top prizes were awarded to the top essays. The first prize was won by Exsley Taloiburi (Solomon Islands); the second prize by Ms Lynelle Tina Popot (Solomon Islands and lecturer at the SICHE); whilst the third prize was awarded to Mr Steve of the Federated States of Micronesia. Another Solomon Islander who is also part of the thirteen top essay writers and who flew all the way from Japan to attend the regional workshop is Mr Adrian Toni, a Master student in Environmental Economics in Japan.

The prizes were presented to the top three winners by the CTA Senior Programme Coordinator, Ms Judith Ann Francis, who flew from Armsterdam in Netherlands where the CTA headquarters is based; and the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Professor Derek Gardiner.

The youth congress workshop on the theme "Tapping the potential of science, technology and innovation in agri-food chains to create employment and wealth for youths in the Pacific" is hosted by the USP Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Business and Economics. The overall objective of the congress and exposition is to create awareness among the Pacific youth on alternative employment opportunities in agriculture, science and technology and sensitize them to possible strategies that can be used to exploit such opportunities.
