Youths want Solomon Government to set up Youth Ministry

A Commonwealth Caucus youth representative of Solomon Islands calls on the government to tackle the root causes of poverty.

Jasper Anisi says poverty is caused by things which governments do not address.

Among these, he says, are drugs, alcohol, unemployment, saying if these social issues are not tackled at an early stage, they could bring more burden to Solomon Islands in the future.

Mr Anisi says poverty just doesn't mean lack of food or money.

He says one way the government can seriously address these issues is through an established youth Ministry of department.

"It's not my personal opinion, but I'm talking as a national youth rep. When I discussed these issues with young people and NGOs advocating youth issues, this is the issue that was mentioned. By having a Youth Ministry specifically looking at youth affairs would help directly deal with issues facing young people, and then most of the social issues would be solved."

Mr Anisi raised these issues in his speech during the International Youth Day last Friday for which the theme was Tackling Poverty Together.
