SI Student wins top award in Japan

A Solomon Islands student on a three month program under the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) program in Japan has won an award for his project. Timothy Roy from Araoko village in North New Georgia was awarded the best student out of more than 15 participatants.

The Lambete Agriculture Division assistance field officer came out the top beating participants around the world like Nicaragua, El-Salvador, China, Afghanistan, Mongolia, Malaysia, Philippines, Africa and the pacific.

Married with a child Roy did his primary education at Talakali Primary in Malaita Province and later to Betikama secondary school where he completed his form one to six. He attended the three months program on planning and management agriculture extension course in Japan from May-July.

During the course, one of the assignments was to write a future action plan for agriculture. Roy tackle this on the topic “Improving Future SI Agriculture Rice Planting”. He focused on how to improve rural livelihood rice production in small scale.

As part of the programme, the action plans were submitted to JICA officers who carefully access the written projects and present an award to the participant who writes the best plan of action. Roy turned out to be the top. “I am very happy and cannot believe when they awarded me with such an award at our closing session last week,” a happy Roy stated after collecting his award. He said participants in the programme have masters qualification and for a Solomon Islander who comes from a rural extension agriculture like Munda is quite surprising.

He stated that he would be returning with his report to SI and show it to his superiors in the Department of Agriculture in Honiara. “This is so that they assist me in putting this project plan in to action,” Roy said. He said agriculture especially food production like rice must be prioritized by SI government in it’s budget as agriculture is the back bone of the any country.

He said most of time government allocated education and medical more money than agriculture and he commended the Japanese government for prioritizing agriculture in their national budget. However, he said he is very interested indeed and happy to attend future programme with JICA or other organisation recommended to him by his department.
