Two to Contest Election for New PM: Fono and Sogavare

Two Members of Parliament will contest the election for a new Prime Minister this Thursday 4th May.

The Governor General, H.E Sir Nathaniel Waena announced that at the end of the nomination period at 4 pm saturday afternoon, Hon. Fred Fono, the MP for Central Kwara'ae and current Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister was nominated by the Caretaker Government and Hon. Manasseh Sogavare, MP for East Choiseul was nominated by the Opposition group.

Hon. Fono was nominated by Hon. Seth Gukuna, MP for Rennell and Bellona; Hon. Clement Kengava, MP for North West Choiseul; Hon. Peter Shanel, MP for Central Guadalcanal and Hon. James Tora, MP for Ulawa Ugi.

Hon. Sogavare was nominated by Hon. Patteson Oti, MP for Temotu Nende; Hon. Bartholomew Ulufa’alu, MP for Aoke/Langalanga; Hon Job Dudley Tausinga, MP for North New Georgia and Hon. Dr Derrick Sikua, MP for North East Guadalcanal.

Governor General, Sir Nathaniel has also confirmed that the election of the Prime Minister will take place on 4th May.

The election of a new Prime Minister became necessary after Prime Minister, Hon. Snyder Rini resigned 26th April after he lost five MPs in Parliament. He was elected as Prime Minister 18th April.
